Onrush looks like no other racer in new gameplay

We finally get a proper look at Onrush, and it looks completely different from your typical driving game.

We recently got a reveal trailer and release date for Onrush, the new MotorStorm-inspired racer from Codemasters.

Onrush always sounded ambitious, and thanks to plenty of gameplay footage released this week, it's easy to see why.

Unlike most racing games, Onrush doesn't have the traditional circuit/sprint setup where you're asked to reach the finish line as fast as possible. Instead, the goal in Onrush is to score points, which you mainly do by crashing into other cars and doing cool stunts.

Everything you do earns you boost, which, when used to do the aforementioned actions, builds up your Overdrive meter - an even more powerful form of boost. This is how you score points, and the team that reaches the target score first wins.

Onrush not only borrows team-based shooter mechanics, it also has a version of MOBA's creeps (or Titanfall). These cars, called fodder, are there to help you do something in between taking down other racers. Since there is no finish line, the idea makes complete sense. There are 12 of these in every race, on top of the 6v6 human-controlled cars.

There's a lot of interesting ideas in Onrush, but seeing it in action is all you need for it to click. Video below via RajmanGaming.

Onrush is out June 5 on PS4, and Xbox One, with an open beta scheduled for May. A PC version is coming at some point later.
