Fortnite’s battle royale mode now runs at 60fps on all consoles, thanks to optimisation work and graphical tweaks.
Fortnite’s big February update brought many additions to the game, but the biggest was that it added a 60fps option for the game’s battle royale mode on all consoles, including base PS4, and Xbox One.
When 60fps modes get added to games after the fact, they typically only unlock the frame-rate, never quite hitting 60fps even on the more powerful PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
In the case of Fortnite, according to a new Digital Foundry report, the game’s 60fps mode mostly works as advertised.
Epic achieved this by optimising the game’s CPU performance a great deal. The developer also made a few changes in visual presentation to be able to hit a relatively consistent 60fps.
Frame render times have been reduced, and a dynamic resolution scaling kicks in when things get hectic. On Xbox One, resolution jumps between 900p and 600p, with 792p being the most common resolution. Xbox One X can go between 1152p to 1728p, but mostly hovers around 1440p.
PS4, on the other hand, tops out at 1080p, but drops to 756p when necessary. PS4 Pro also hits 1080p as a maximum, and sometimes drops to 900p.
This temporal reconstruction of the image results in a softer look, with the occasional dithering artefacts. The tweaks also extend to the graphical quality in 60fps mode, as you might expect. Shadow quality, motion blur are all reduced – except on PS4 Pro (though not Xbox One X), according to the report.
You still have the 30fps mode if you don’t care for the slight drop in graphical quality, but the frame-rate advantage cannot be denied.
