XCOM creator's Phoenix Point looks great in new gameplay footage

Phoenix Point, the XCOM spiritual successor from series creator Julian Gollop, looks to mix the classic XCOM formula with Fallout mechanics.

Phoenix Point has been in development for around two years, but it's been a while since we've seen new gameplay. Julian Gollop was on hand at the PC Gamer Weekender to demo the latest build of the game, and it looks as great as ever.

Phoenix Point is turn-based strategy in the vein of XCOM, but the combat is more interesting because you get to target your enemies' different limbs, taking them out and preventing certain attacks.

The gameplay below (via PC Gamer) shows a full match, rotating between the typical XCOM archetypes and their movement abilities. You have a jetpack-equipped trooper, the long-range snipers, shotgun-wielding assaulter and so on.

Standard abilities like overwatch also return, though many of the abilities seem to rely on a resource called Willpower. The whole thing has a very modern XCOM look to it, though it remains to be seen if the game is recreating classic or modern XCOM.
