Paladins is also getting a Battle Royale mode, continuing the slow evolution of every game into Battlegrounds

Paladins, Hi-Rez’s hero shooter, is taking drastic action to secure a slice of the enormous Battlegrounds pie.

A new mode is coming to Paladins which seems directly inspired by PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

The mode, which is even called “Battlegrounds”, will launch sometime this year. It will see 100 players gathered on a map over 300 times the size of a typical Paladins Siege map, looting gear and eliminating each other.

The key difference seems to be that the Paladins version of Battlegrounds is team-based, and those who queue solo will be teamed up into squads automatically.

Speaking at a Hi-Rez Expo roundtable reported by PCGamesN, Hi-Rez CEO Erez Goren was frank about the new mode’s inspirations.

“Just like Battlegrounds mode, obviously we didn’t invent anything even remotely close to that, but since our player-base really seems to love playing both PUBG and Fortnite, we figured we might as well give them a taste for that,” he said.

Goren said all game development draws heavily on other, pre-existing ideas and there are no “pure, creative thoughts” in any current game, citing MOBAs as an example.

Paladins joins Warframe and Fortnite in adding a mode inspired by the phenomenally successful PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Both titles have enjoyed success as a result of the addition, and we don’t exactly expect Paladins to suffer for it.

Paladins released in September 2016, a couple of months after Overwatch. Blizzard’s blockbuster sort of sucked all the air out of the room, but Paladins and even Battleborn have something to offer hero shooter fans.
