Black Friday 2017 the most successful for Sony in PlayStation's 23-year history

That's a whole lot of PlayStation stuff sold.

Black Friday is of course a big deal in the world of video games - you've scarcely been able to escape it on every store front, down the high street, and even with websites like VG247 trying to save you a bit of cash by digging up the best deals. It's been busy.

It's been especially busy for Sony, it seems, with PlayStation Network boss Eric Lempel telling CNBC that it's not just a big year, but a record-breaking year.

"We had the biggest Black Friday in PlayStation history," Lempel said, via GamesIndustry.biz. "We sold more consoles than we ever have in our 23-year history, and [PlayStation] Plus is a natural addition to that purchase.

"Anything can happen on Black Friday, and so we wanted to make sure that people went in, they bought a console, but that they also bought PlayStation Plus because they'll get a lot of value out of that service with their new console purchase."

There were some really great deals on PlayStation products this Black Friday, including reduced prices on the regular PS4 and the PS4 Pro, some deep cuts to first-party games and PS+ subscriptions and even some very attractive PlayStation VR bundles featuring the new-look version of the headset.

"Going into this generation, a lot of people were counting out the console business and saying it wasn't going to work out," Lempel continued.

"But as you can see, the PlayStation 4 business is thriving. Last month, Sony Corp. reported their earnings. Profits were up 346%; the majority of that was fueled by the PlayStation business. We're having a phenomenal year. We've sold more consoles than ever before, and the console business is doing great."
