PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is getting 3D positional audio

Conversations using the in-game chat in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will soon become a lot more realistic.

Battlegrounds’ current in-game voice implementation sounds like just about every other multiplayer shooter out there, but in a game where positioning matters, the audio should take that into account more.

Which is exactly what’s going to happen. Developer Bluehole has announced that it’s working with Vivox to implement the latter’s positional voice tech into the game. This is actually a good fit for PUBG, especially if you’re willing to leave the in-game voice unmuted.


Interestingly, the press release says that Vivox “enhances security by protecting user’s information from potential out-of-game threats.” This could mean be referring to player IP addresses, which are often – with the help of some software – easily available in games with VOIP. This can sometimes make players a target for DDoSing and other attacks.

Bluehole did not say when we should expect this feature to launch, though the game did just get the big September patch a day ago.
