Major League Baseball believes the Overwatch League logo is too similar to its own, and it’s set to oppose Blizzard’s trademark for the logo.
The information comes by way of the Morrison/Lee law firm blog, revealing that Blizzard’s trademark only managed to get past the initial approval process.
The next step is gaining full approval, which can only happen when no other company objects to the trademark. The party that believes a trademark from another company will harm theirs in some way, has 30 days to either oppose it outright, or file for extension to prepare the opposition.
This is what MLB did in this case, and only one day before the 30-day deadline. The company reportedly requested 90 days to investigate. The request has since been accepted, so the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ‘TTAB’, and Blizzard both have to wait on the opposition.
Upon inspection, there’s only a slightly resemblance between the two logos. The colours, player’s pose, and the place of the line break are all completely different. More importantly, no one would confuse one with the other.
In fact, if anyone should have trouble with a logo it’s Major League Gaming.
The MLG logo is a lot similar to MLB’s than Overwatch’s. And it’s not just that, there are many other leagues that employ the same style in their logos.
The deadline for filing is July 26, and if successful, the Overwatch League logo could be changed.
This comes days after the Overwatch League’s big announcement recently of the first seven registered teams, in fact one of the new teams is owned by New York Mets’ Jeff Wilpon.
