All it’s missing is Mario shouting ‘Hey, I’m-a walkin’ here!’
This gameplay footage, captured at E3 by Arekkz, shows Mario exploring New Donk City for ten minutes – not enough time to see a whole lot in what looks like a pretty vast, sprawling world, but it shows the game’s variety off well.
Near the beginning, Mario is able to travel through power lines like the squids from Splatoon (or like certain denizens of Twin Peaks, but that’s probably not a comparison they’re drawing intentionally). Arekkz guides him while he uses Cappy to possess a nearby man and control the RC car he’s holding a remote for, grabbing one of the many ‘Moons’ scattered around the environment. These moons are Odyssey’s equivalent of ‘Stars’ or ‘Shines’.
Mario takes to the sewers for some light puzzle-solving after that, and the Nintendo rep standing by Arekkz points out a hidden moon in this area that can only be seen by rotating the camera. It’s pretty nifty.
Back up on the surface, Mario jumps across some Donkey Kong-style girders, collecting another moon. That’s four in eight minutes, backing up claims that the game will be bursting with collectibles. After a bit more exploring, the footage ends with Mario zipping around on a scooter before meeting with Mayor Pauline – a real blast from Mario’s past – who asks him to find and collect four musicians for an upcoming festival. He manages to find one – netting another moon – but then the demo ends.
