Rainbow Six: Siege is free this weekend, so you can find out what all the fuss is about

Rainbow Six: Siege is very quietly one of the best shooters of the past two years - and still going strong. Come have a go.

Rainbow Six: Siege is great. It released very close to the November 2015 Paris attacks so Ubisoft sensibly made no noise about it, which meant it released to little fanfare - but only went from strength to strength after that. We ended up naming Rainbow Six: Siege one of the best shooters of 2016.

If you've not yet checked it out, here's a perfect excuse at the cost of precisely zero cashmoney: Ubisoft is throwing a free weekend for Rainbow Six: Siege from February 2 through 5. As usual with these trials, your progression will carry over to the full game should you choose to continue.

Ubisoft hasn't yet said how to access the free trial, but firing up Uplay or logging into console stores on February 2 is probably a good bet.

If you do enjoy yourself and want to buy into Rainbow Six: Siege, you have a couple of options. At retail, you can grab the base game or the original Gold Edition including all Season 1 content. On Steam, Uplay and beyond, you can grab the base game; the new Year 2 Gold Edition which comes with the Season 2 pass; or the Complete Edition with both DLC seasons.

The Rainbow Six: Siege Season 2 pass is available separately as well, and you could also keep an eye out in case the the intermittent Starter Edition returns if you're cash-strapped and don't mind a heavy grind (or a bunch of microtransactions).

Rainbow Six: Siege kicks off its second season of content very shortly with Operation Velvet Shell, delivering a new map and two new operators.

It's the first of four expected major content drops for Rainbow Six: Siege this year, and will be revealed during the Six Invitational, which takes place alongside the free weekend.
