Play Vermintide, maybe find yourself a better hat.

Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide is all about that loot, but its RNG is a fickle beast. Increase your chances of scoring the best items by hunting down tomes and grimoires.

  • A tome is held in the healing item slot and doubles the success rate of one loot die, for every player.
  • A grimoire is held in the potion slot and increases the quality of your loot drop by one tier, for every player. However, it also reduces the party’s total health pool by 33%.

Bar the final level, each of the main story missions in Vermintide features three tomes and two grimoires to collect, and the effects stack.

If your Vermintide party collect all three tomes and both grimoires, your end of level loot drops will be two tiers higher than the base roll, with a significant boost to your chances of higher ranked gear in the base roll. However, you’ll have to complete the mission at one-third health, and with only one player carrying a healing item.

Tome and grimoire locations are listed below along with video walkthroughs from Vermintide YouTuber Luna Mie.

The Horn of Magnus tome and grimoire locations

  • Grimoire #1

On the street leading towards the gunpowder area as you head towards it, search the alleys on the right for a seeming dead end with a stone wall and a bush. Walk through the bush to descend a flight of stairs. At the bottom, turn around and look behind you to spot the Grimoire on a beam above the door; you’ll need to hop up on the small platforms to the right to reach it.

  • Tome #1

In the same room as Grimoire #1, walk through the bush in the corner to find the first tome waiting on the floor.

  • Tome #2

Before dropping down into the gunpowder area, look for a small church near a partially collapsed fence you can walk up like a ramp. The tome is in a chest on the altar in the church.

  • Grimoire #2

After destroying the gate with gunpowder, hug the left wall of the next square to reach the crates near some rubble. Climb the sloped crate and leap to the crate with the green cover, then turn around to jump to the platform behind you. Jump to the short protruding beam and then to the verandah roof. At the end of the verandah you need to make a tricky jump around the corner to another platform, and can drop down from the end of it to reach the grimoire.

  • Tome #3

The third tome is in the tavern but requires a bit of running around to retrieve. You need to open two chests in the tavern – one by some stairs and one in a small room – which reveals a secret door in the small room. Interact with it to find the tome inside.

Supply and Demand tome and grimoire locations

  • Grimoire #1

Near the start of the level you can climb a ladder to a seemingly empty rooftop. Jump to the branches of the nearby tree and then to the sloped roof beyond. Cross the rooftop and jump down and across the street to the platforms halfway up the wall of the building opposite. Follow the planks to drop into a courtyard; the grimoire is in a broken barrel.

  • Tome #1

After the Dog Pens look for an alley leading off to the right. Head down the stairs and go to the end of the dead end platform, then jump on the crate to the left and search the wooden protrusion from the house at this end to spot the tome.

  • Tome 2#

Look for a ladder in the street with a tower in it. At the top, move anti-clockwise around the platform to drop down to a lower platform, where the tome is sitting on a crate. You can also reach this tome by jumping from the other side once you know where it is.

  • Grimoire #2

In the Carpenter’s Guild area you’ll see a stage coach. Climb on top via the rear and jump to the nearby sloped roof. Cross to the opposite side of the roof and jump to the platform. You can then platform your way across the scaffolding to find the grimoire at the end.

  • Tome #3

The final tome is in a corner of the Merchant Quarter Cesspool square.

The Wizard’s Tower tome and grimoire locations

  • Tome 1#

This level is hellishly difficult to navigate so your best bet is to explore every possible path. The first tome is on a bookshelf in a room with a treasure chest, several flights up from the bottom floor.

  • Grimoire #1

As you explore the upper corridors you’ll find a door you can open to reveal several items and couple of cages. Go inside, then turn around and look at the top right of the doorframe to see the grimoire on a tall stack of books.

  • Tome #2

From the first grimoire, exit the room and turn left. Take the first left, then continue straight on to climb a set of stairs. At the top of the stairs, turn right and go to the end to see the tome and some other goodies.

  • Grimoire #2

After things get a bit Escheresque (or Labyrinth-like, if you prefer), search until you find a doorway you can drop down through. This puts you right by a set of stairs that seem impossible to climb, but if you persist with jumping you can open the door at the top, allowing you to collect the grimoire behind it.

  • Tome #3

The easiest way to find this one is to exit the Hall of Illusion, then turn around and re-enter. Bear right-ish and follow the area around without dropping down or taking any corridors and you’ll eventually arrive at a dead end; look across to spot a chest defying gravity against the wall. The third tome is inside.

Engines of War tome and grimoire locations

  • Grimoire #1

Make your way through the caves until you can pass back out into the sunshine. On the far side of this first little area is a tree hiding some rocks you can climb up. Follow the rocks around and jump across the gap, then hug the right wall to find the grimoire by some candles.

  • Tome #1

Cross the bridge to Warden’s Lookout then bear left as you advance. When you’re almost all the way across the area turn more sharply left and go to the edge overlooking the ravine to find the tome in a ring of mushrooms, with some candles nearby.

  • Tome 2#

Enter the Greenwald Lodge Ruins via the front arch and pass out the other side. Go straight forward to spot a little flight of stairs. Turn right at the top and then hug the right wall to follow the path around and down to where it peters out at the second tome.

  • Grimoire #2

Look for a standing stone surrounded by arched, multilevel ruins. Nearby you’ll spot some spears near some red hangings. This is tricky, but you can jump up and onto the lowest spear, then onto the one with the skull, and then across to the next one, allowing you to drop down to the opposite side of the wall. Turn left and go through the narrow opening to find the grimoire near some candles.

  • Tome #3

When you spot the farmhouse in the distance, turn right and look for a broken bridge. The third tome is sitting by a tripod of spears on your right, at the edge.

Garden of Morr tome and grimoire locations

  • Tome #1

After entering the graveyard by way of the broken down fence, search the right wall for a tall statue. The tome is at its feet.

  • Grimoire #1

The first grimoire is on a narrow ledge halfway up a wall just after the one way drop. There’s a skull on the wall showing its approximate location. We had trouble collecting this one from below, and ended up carrying a barrel back to stand on in order to reach it. With a two player team you might be able to figure out how to drop down to it from above.

  • Tome 2#

Look for three near-identical tombs on your left as you advance after the one way drop. When you see them, turn right back around and move forward until you hit the wall. Search this wall to find a semi-circular opening; the tome is right at the back inside this opening, hidden by a little jutting wall.

  • Grimoire #2

There’s an area where you pass through a narrow, twisty canyon to reach some high ground before a one-way drop. Just before you drop down you arrive in a little enclosed stone structure; search the rear wall, opposite the drop, to find a gap you can pass through. The grimoire is outside.

  • Tome #3

Hug the right wall in the hedge maze and you’ll come to this tome at the feet of another statue.

The Enemy Below tome and grimoire locations

  • Grimoire #1

In the area where you hug the right wall to pass around a room on an elevated walkway, drop down in the corner to spot an item under an arch. From here, jump down to the mossy arch, then turn around to jump back to another platform with a skeleton. Move to the other end of this platform to jump to a beam, and then make a very ricky corner jump around to the room with the grimoire.

  • Tome #1

As you advance, look for a wall blocking off the bottom half of the circular sewer tunnel. Spotting this in the distance is your cue to begin searching any openings on the right hand side; one of them will circle back to a pile of wooden detritus and a tome.

  • Tome #2

In the room with lots of water and multiple levels, you need to drop down to a low wall and then leap to a barred window ledge in order to grab the tome.

  • Grimoire #2

The easiest way to get this grimoire is to continue until you reach the area called Skaven’s Nest, then turn around and backtrack, hugging the right wall. Explore the rocky tunnels to find the grimoire in a passage hidden behind some red curtains.

  • Tome #3

After entering the Skaven’s Nest, turn left and hug the left wall to find the tome right at the very end of this dead end passage, on the right by some candles.

The White Rat grimoire location

  • This final mission only has one loot collectible – a single grimoire. When you’re supposed to go down a short flight of steps from a hatch in the roof, jump onto the low wall bordering the roof instead. From here you can jump down to a wall in the corner of the area below, and from there across to a ledge leading into a ruined building. Go through the door in the corner and climb the stairs to find the grimoire in a little room with some shelves and candles.
