Metal Gear Survive gameplay trailer shows how to keep its creatures at bay

Whatever you may think of Metal Gear Survive’s controversial backstory, the concept itself – merging Metal Gear Solid 5’s gameplay with horde-based co-op – has potential. Now the latest footage from the Tokyo Games Show is offering a visual representation of how each match will unfold, as a full team collects resources in a sandbox environment, completes key objectives, and defends locations from waves of zombie-like creatures.

In the displayed mission, players must activate a transmitter near a recently-opened wormhole to send a distress signal back to Earth. The mission unfolds over two distinct phases. First, players must infiltrate a hostile location and clear any creatures wandering nearby. Metal Gear Solid 5’s stealth combat applies here as players sneak past creatures and neutralize threats without drawing attention. Creating distractions using wild animals is still a viable option, while the co-op system lets you co-ordinate efforts with up to three friends.

The second phase emphasizes defense. Upon activating the wormhole, waves of creatures spawn along the map’s edge and rush towards your activated transmitter. Using resources collected from the map, players can assemble defensive walls and weapons barring or redirecting each wave until your team can wipe them out. Unfortunately each wave gets progressively more challenging, and dwindling supplies may force teammates to strike out elsewhere in the map for more resources. It might be worth mentioning that even in this demo video, the team utterly fails this final phase.

Metal Gear Survive launches in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms.
