What does it mean to set an RPG in a world where the baddies have already won? Tyranny devs answer

Tyranny developer Obsidian peels back the curtain on this unusual RPG.

Tyranny’s claim to fame, besides being a new RPG from he much-loved Obsidian, is that it’s set after the evil empire has already marched forth and conquered, defeating all the noble heroes who rose to try and stop it. It’s sort of like seeing what happens after a game over screen when you die at the final boss – and there was no chance to continue or reload.

It’s an interesting idea which presents certain narrative challenges. In a new three-part video series diving into development of Tyranny, Obsidian staff will discuss how they’ve approached the project with a view to reactivity, and how it has been shaped by its fictional history. This first episode goes over the origins of the idea.

Tyranny is coming to Linux, Mac and PC sometime later this year.
