A spooky encounter in an abandoned 90's MMO

This is amazing.

A spooky encounter in an abandoned 90's MMO

The video above shows streamer Vinesauce exploring Active Worlds, an abandoned 90's virtual world in which players would gather to create spaces and chat - sort of like Second Life.

Lit by eerie moonlight, the empty spaces have a delicate poignancy; it's hard not to think of the hours spent crafting shared and private spaces, and what it must have been like when players brought it to life. Now it just hangs around in cyberspace, a mausoleum where nothing living stirs.

Or - does it?

This video dates back to March but is doing the rounds on Reddit today, and is so good we just had to share it. I especially enjoy Vinny's quiet exclamations throughout - the "what the f**k" under his breath, and the shocked choking sounds.

I don't want to say anything more because it's terrific fun to watch from start to finish, but if you want to know more about what happened here and also afterwards, there's a Reddit AMA which is worth a look at.

What an amazing experience. Games and the people who play them are the best! Hooray!
