Battlefield 1 has six weapon classes including SMGs and Semi Autos

Battlefield 1 will offer players six categries of primary weapon to choose from, DICE has revealed.

These six categories are shotguns, SMGs, LMGs, semi autos, sidearms and sniper rifles - pretty familiar stuff for most FPS players, despite the relatively unexplored setting. Each of these classes include multiple varieties of weapon, including some of the first successful assault rifles ever made.

Weapons can be customised with up to three pre-set loadouts, rather than attachments. You'll also be able to tweak zoom levels, reticles and more - and apply skins.

In addition to firearms, there are a range of melee weapons, some of which double as tools, and a variety of grenades.

"The weapons of Battlefield 1 are a bit more specialized. To get the most out of them, you have to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and use the right one in the right situation," weapon designer Julian Schimek said in a Q&A on the Battlefield website.

Battlefield 1 releases in October for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
