It’s time to move on from Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo hopes to have a new movie out within three years

Nintendo wants to get into the movie business, apparently.

Speaking in a Japanese interview with Asahi Shnbun translated by Nintendo Life, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said the platform holder is investigating movie production.

Although there are no plans to announce at present, it seems to be something Kimishima wants to fast track; he said the first film could be ready for release within two to three years. That’s a really spanking pace for Hollywood, but it sounds like Nintendo wants to produce the movies in-house.

Nintendo has experimented in this area before with Pikmin Short Movies, and it’s not unheard of for publishers to attempt to make the jump – see Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, for example.

The Big N hasn’t had much luck with Hollywood. The infamous Super Mario Bros. movie seems to have scared it off licensing for quite some time, although plenty of Pokemon movies appeared thanks to the efforts of property owner The Pokemon Company, of which Nintendo is partial owner. Nintendo characters did appear in Wreck-It Ralph, which went down pretty well, but also in Pixels, which, uh, didn’t.

Video games and movies have a rough history. We’re all very interested to see how the Assassin’s Creed movie works out after star Michael Fassbender said someone’s go to do it right sometime. The first Assassin’s Creed trailer wasn’t organ-coughingly awful, so that’s a start.
