Sega looking to make Shenmue 1 and 2 remasters a reality

Shenmue re-releases. It just makes sense, doesn't it.

Sega actively looking at Shenmue 1 and 2 remasters

With Shenmue 3 on the horizon, interest in the first two games has risen sharply.

The cult classics may not have been blockbusters of their time, but they've been hugely influential and have fervent fanbases. Unfortunately, playing them is a bit of a hassle: the first one only released on Dreamcast, and while the second one also released on Xbox, and who still has an original Xbox hanging around? (Well, us, obviously, but not everyone.)

It's not that hard to pick up copies of the first two games online (and the hardware to run them if necessary) but the intervening decade and a half have not been kind, and a little HD brush up wouldn't go astray. Remasters seem like a no-brainer - and the good news is, Sega agrees.

During the latest episode of Sega Central, community manager Dan Sheridan said Sega is working on it.

"Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to current platforms as we will need to ensure that any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles," he said.

"And with games as immersive as Shenmue 1 and 2, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality."

Nice. Let's hope it works out before Shenmue 3 arrives in late 2017.
