Sony is working on a PlayStation 4 with the ability to run games at 4K resolution.

This is according to developers who told Kotaku at GDC a PS4 console with increased graphical power, dubbed "PlayStation 4.5", was currently in the works.

It will purportedly have more processing power to support 4K and to better enhance the PlayStation VR game experience - all thanks to an upgraded GPU.

Various verified development sources spoke to more than one writer at Kotaku regarding "PS4.5" and while some of the details were "vague", once source said the console felt “exploratory” and may not arrive this year.

It was also rumored that Sony met with developers at GDC this week to discuss the console, and some developers where even overheard talking about PS4.5 on the show floor to one another.

When reached for comment, a Sony spokesperson told Kotaku it doesn't comment on rumors and speculation.

At present, PS4 "outputs games at a max resolution of 1920×1080 pixels when playing games, whereas 4K outputs at 4096×2160 pixels," explained Gematsu.

So while the current console doesn't support 4K resolution, it does support 4K for videos and photos.

We'll keep you up-to-date on this as more information becomes available.
