An expert attempt to craft an accessible fighter goes to an early grave.

Remember Rising Thunder? The free-to-play fighter was designed to take all the control complexity out, leaving only the strategy of battle behind.

It was developed by Radiant Entertainment, which was founded by Tom and Tony Cannon – the team who started EVO – and the project was led by former Street Fighter champion Seth Killian. It’s been available in alpha form on PC since August 2015.

Well, it’s closing. Radiant has been acquired by League of Legends developer Riot Games, and Rising Thunder will be shuttered on March 18.

“As for Rising Thunder, the team will start work on a new game that we’re incredibly excited about. We wish we could say more now, but rest assured you’ll hear more when the time is right,” the Cannons said in a letter published on the Radiant website.

Radiant’s other project, the Kickstarter-funded Stonehearth, will continue “full speed ahead”. Alpha updates will roll out uninterrupted. No details of the acquisition were shared.
