Disney Infinity is taking a year off

Disney Infinity 3.0 will be supported for at least another year before a sequel drops.

Parents and collectors around the world today reported a feeling of relief in the wake of Disney's decision to stick with Disney Infinity 3.0 rather than moving on to a sequel immediately.

So don't expect Disney Infinity 4.0 in 2016; this year, Avalanche will focus on delivering new content and supporting last year's release. Disney seems to have been motivated by consumer fatigue concerns, as well having already covered its major property bases.

"We value our fans and your feedback, and we've heard your requests to extend the life of our Starter Packs loud and clear," Disney Interactive general manager John Blackburn said in a blog post.

"You've asked for a wider variety of content, across a wide variety of brands with each Play Set, and that's what we're committed to delivering. So, in 2016, we are focusing our development efforts on adding more Play Sets and characters - based on the biggest events coming from Disney this year - to the 3.0 Edition."

Disney Infinity was the bestselling game in the toys-to-life category for the last two years, but experienced year-on-year declines in unit sales in 2015. The first game launched in 2013, with a collection of Disney favourites as well as Pirates of the Caribbean and Pixar characters. Marvel and Star Wars sequels followed in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
