Team Fortress 2 finally getting competitive matchmaking

Valve is finally close to bringing a competitive mode to Team Fortress 2.

Having spent some years talking about it, Valve is finally ready to test out competitive play and matchmaking for Team Fortress 2.

The Team Fortress 2 online experience has largely remained reliant on finding a server and joining it, without any form of service to match people with one another based on their skill. This is about to change, however, with the imminent beta test of competitive play.

After creating an official group, Valve has now detailed the testing process.

The plan is to have multiple stages of testing, the first of which takes place next week and will bring in a small number of users. By joining the group, you're going to get a Competitive Matchmaking Beta Pass, which is how the system will allow you in testing.

You'll need to have purchased Team Fortress 2 before June, 2013, or have made a purchase from the Mann Co. Store. You also need to have Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator enabled, and have a phone number associated with your Steam account.
