Hellblade: how motion capture was used to develop different styles of movement

Ninja Theory has released a new Hellblade developer diary which goes over the studio's first experience using motion capture.

The team discusses how it tested the tech out to make sure it would work with gameplay animations as there "was no fall back" from previous experience.

If it didn't work, the only other option would be to severely limit Senua’s movement.

After covering all the basics such as walking, standing, running and jumping, the team had to work on more detailed actions. These include "walking in a fearful manner," walking through various depths of water, and even fire.

Team Ninja also wanted to add different styles of movement into the game, as no one "walks the same way all the time." Because of this, players will see a variety of movement type and speeds when playing as Senua.

As with the previous 19 developer diaries, this one is really interesting and you should give the entire thing a watch.

A release date has not been set for Hellblade, but it will arrive on PC and PlayStation 4 simultaneously.
