Dear Rockstar: please can we have a gun safe for GTA Online?

We need somewhere to stash old weapons rather than tediously cycling through the weapons wheel, over and over again.

The problem of the GTA Online weapon wheel just won't go away. In fact, it grows steadily worse.

It's something that's bugged players for years: you're unable to trim your weapons inventory down to your favourites and instead have to cycle through all your guns to find your weapon of choice. You have to do this for all eight categories; pistols, machine guns, assault rifles, snipers, melee, shotguns, heavy weapons and explosives.

After booting up the game, you need to highlight your favourites for quick switching in each category every time you play. Every. Single. Time. And if you want to switch between weapons in a hurry you have cycle through everything to get to the deadliest.

This is a problem in shootouts, in frantic Free Roam Events, in any session that requires on-the-fly thinking and reactions. The technical term for this is "a ballache".

If you've reached Rank 120 you'll have unlocked every weapon available. This problem gets worse as Rockstar adds new weapons to the game, such as the Machete or the TEC-9. We're compulsive enough that we have to have them. We've earnt them, afterall.

But then we're stuck with them. Obviously your favourite guns are personal choice, but if you're carrying the Combat MG you don't ever need to keep hold of the regular MG. And no one wants to lug the musket around - it was a regrettable purchase made after a few beers on Independence Day. Don't even talk to me about the torch or the fireworks launcher.

You can drop some weapons in-game, but this only seems to work for some players. Besides, once you respawn in a different session they're all back in your inventory. How many times do you play GTA Online and get booted from one session into another? All the time.

There's a sort-of fix, but it's as clunky as it is unreliable. In theory you can go into the single player game, highlight all your favourite weapons in the weapons wheel and save. This then supposedly becomes your default weapons selection in GTA Online.

But this hasn't worked for me for months. And that "solution" doesn't work because not all weapons are available in the single-player game. If, like me, you finished the campaign on Xbox 360 and then upgraded to PS4, you won't have unlocked a lot of weapons on this gen unless you've played far enough into the single-player game for a second time. So again it's moot. Hell, GTA can't even remember to boot me into Online rather than a single player session when I start the game up despite me setting it to default OVER A MILLION TIMES.

This isn't a new problem but it is one that grates every time I play. One of the latest suggestions from the player community is to put a gun safe in high-end apartments, allowing players to store unwanted weapons in their Heist room. A simple solution, thematically spot-on.

I honestly believe that Rockstar does listen to the community. It's implemented plenty of changes that started out as requests, whether that's simply allowing players to restock on ammo from the inventory menu or adding entire DLC, such as super yachts. The weapons wheel has been an annoying problem since day one, but I'm keeping the faith.
