Deserts of Kharak multiplayer footage has plenty of Homeworld callbacks

Take a look at Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak’s multiplayer.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak developer Blackbird Interactive has released a few minutes of footage showing off a multiplayer mode called artefact retrieval mode.

One of the themes of the commentary is how this prequel entry relates to the rest of the Homeworld series. It’s based around “vehicle fantasy”, which in past games meant spaceships but now centres on “carriers”, which act as bases.

Although 3D movement is limited by the terrain, play fields aren’t flat planes; you’ll use a familiar control system to position your units at various heights depending on the landscape. The difference is that cover plays a more prominent role in strategy.

As a reminder, the team at Blackbird Interactive is led by a bunch of former Relic Entertainment staffers, and Deserts of Kharak fills in the backstory of the earlier Homeworld games.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak releases on PC on January 20.
