Ron Gilbert would really like to make another Monkey Island

Ron Gilbert, the lead designer of the first two Monkey Island games, has expressed desire to return to the 25-year-old series.

Writing on his Grumpy Gamer blog, Gilbert has reflected on the series he is probably most well-known for. "It amazes me that people still play and love Monkey Island", he writes. "I never would have believed it back then."

Unfortunately, Gilbert - who only worked on the first two games out of five - is in no position to develop a new game independently.

"I don’t know if I will ever get to make another Monkey Island", he writes. "I always envisioned the game as a trilogy and I really hope I do, but I don’t know if it will ever happen. Monkey Island is now owned by Disney and they haven't shown any desire to sell me the IP."

"I don’t know if I could make Monkey Island 3a without complete control over what I was making and the only way to do that is to own it. Disney: Call me."

It's worth heading over to Gilbert's blog and giving the full piece a read. It's a really interesting look at how PC games were released in the late 80s and early 90s, and contains shots of some pretty heartwarming fan letters.

Ron Gilbert is currently working on classically-styled adventure game Thimbleweed Park.
