Ubisoft looks back over the history of Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed is terrific, says the company that made it.

A new Assassin's Creed trailer series has kicked off promising to give us a look back at the series to date.

The opening of the video suggests Ubisoft wants to message the fact that Assassin's Creed: Syndicate isn't betraying the spirit of the series by introducing new gameplay elements like trains and the rope launcher; in the publisher's view, Assassin's Creed has always been about exploring new directions.

I'm feeling extra cynical about marketing materials today because I'm tired and grumpy, but as an apparently incurable Assassin's Creed fan it's really nice to see abandoned features of the first game discussed in a positive fashion. I liked the more restrictive design of the first game, personally, although you can see why later, more fluid games had more mainstream appeal.

I'm sure some of you are quietly amused to hear the first game heaped with lavish praise, but stay tuned for the better-received sequels.
