Project Cars has pretty deep graphics options on consoles

Project Cars offers players a wide variety of ways to customise their graphic settings on PS4 and Xbox One.

Project Cars is a graphics showcase and all early indications suggest it’s going to be one of the best-looking games out there.

Slightly Mad’s commitment to graphics seems to go deeper than making things pretty, though: it’s also loaded up the PS4 and Xbox One versions with a bunch of graphics options normally only found – if you’re lucky – in PC ports.

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry took screenshots of the menus, which are divided into categories like Visual FX, Authenticity, Field of View and Movement. Not every option found on PC is available, but many of them are there.

One of the reasons why PC gamers get so excited about these kinds of options is that they make a game scalable – you can turn everything up to 11 on a powerful gaming rig, right down to base levels on an under-powered machine, or strike some balance in the middle where you get steady performance.

Since consoles are a standardised experience, though, you might think these options are a little less useful. That’s arguably true, but one of the pillars of Project Cars has been to allow for a customisable experience. Don’t want to be distracted by bloom? Want a wider field of view? Bam. Done.

I think this may be unprecedented for console games, although I’d be interested to learn I’m wrong. Digital Foundry wasn’t able to check whether these options affected performance, so we’ll have to wait for reviews to find out, I guess.

Project Cars will run at 60 fps on both consoles, and uncapped at up to 12K on PC. It will release in early May on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. A Wii U version has not been dated.
