Civilization 3 multiplayer update now available through Steam

Thanks to a new update for Civilization 3, Steam users can now engage in multiplayer.

The online servers for the game were shut off last spring when GameSpy parent Glu discontinued online support for Civ 3 and numerous other titles.

Firaxis and 2K Games said the mutiplayer update supports the Steam version of the title, however; those who own the disc version will need to submit a support request in order to play online.

According to the announcement, the game functions identically to the previous GameSpy version with the exception that the "Direct IP" option has been removed as it is no longer supported.

Save game data should not be negatively affected, 2K said.
