Evolve dev explains the studio’s DLC strategy

Evolve developer Turtle Rock Studios has taken to the forums to try and explain the DLC strategy a bit more, following fan outrage.

Turtle Rock Studios caught quite a bit of heat over the past few days after they revealed DLC plans for Evolve. The comments ranged from confusion over the numerous bundles and options available, to anger at how the whole thing is laid out.

Phil Robb, co-founder of Turtle Rock Studios wrote a few words in reply to a fan on the game’s forums.

Robb started off by saying that the DLC is not on disc, and is not finished, it’s in fact still being developed.

“If we thought we could have finished all those monsters and hunters for ship we would have put them in the box…. Hunters and monsters are a pretty big undertaking, they cost a lot of money and time to make. We’re hoping that once people see how much new hunters and monsters bring to the game that they’ll feel like they got their money’s worth.”

Rob went on to explain that this was the only way they could’ve done it, as they decided to not split the community by selling maps or modes.

“So we worked it out so that any DLC maps are free, any new game modes are free. Then, recognizing that not everyone wants to buy DLC, we made sure that even if you didn’t purchase any of the paid content, you could still play with people who did! So if I buy a new monster or hunter, and you don’t, we can still play together,” he said.

He also promised that DLC hunters and monsters will not upset the balance of the game, as they will not be overpowered.
