Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker has a new release date - and it's not a delay.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will go on sale on Monday December 21, well ahead of its expected January 2 launch, according to industry whispers.

MCV reports retailers have been given the greenlight to sell the game from Monday. Nintendo hasn't made any statement on the matter, and MCV did not name its source.

Retailers haven't made a statement either, but one branch of GAME did confirm a "soft launch" for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Meanwhile, shipping notifications and GAME's app now list an earlier release date for the Wii U exclusive.

As to why we care, well. The US has been enjoying Toad's adventures for quite some time, and it seemed a major shame not to have the latest Wii U release in time for Christmas - for consumers, retailers and Nintendo.

No word on whether the early release applies to Europe and beyond.
