Destiny and similarly connected, social games are hard to review, Bungie COO Pete Parsons has said.
Destiny received quite warm reviews, but there were definitely some low points and it was not the array of nines and tens you’d expect for a true blockbuster.
Nevertheless, and in spite of scorching cynicism in the comments section, the shooter MMO sold like hotcakes and commands a huge amount of attention almost three months on from launch.
Speaking to GamesIndustry, Parsons discussed Destiny’s reviews, as opposed to its actual reception.
“It is true there are a lot of those people who were sceptical that are still playing it now,” he said.
“As we see games like Destiny coming out, it’s very difficult to sit down for nine hours, 11 hours, and write up a review of a game like Destiny, right?
“If I were a reviewer it seems like a nearly impossible challenge to do because there’s just no way. You barely experience sort of the campaign side of it and just PvP and no way you can get into all of the end game activities.
“So it really asks a great question which is ‘how are games like Destiny going to be reviewed in the future?'”
It is an interesting question, yes. Ubisoft, for example, has just flat out said it’s not giving out review copies of The Crew, which is an MMO. On the other hand, it is throwing an open beta, allowing you to get a look at the game ahead of time and make up your own mind.
