G4 to shutter completely at the end of the month

G4, once a gaming-focused cable channel, is now to close completely.

NBC Universal has announced the closure of G4, according to a blog post from Nebraska telco and cable TV provider Great Plains Communications.

The channel had been earmarked to be rebranded as Esquire, with all gaming content being cancelled, but in the end NBC just axed all new content and used the channel to air movies and reruns of LOST, X-Play, Ninja Warrior and Heroes.

It looks like its decided to execute even this last husk now. It's a shame to see the brand go; although its glory years were long past, and there are so many other places to see gaming content, G4 was in its heyday one of the few gaming-specific outlets available through mainstream media.
