Details on two cancelled Star Wars: Rogue Squadron games surface

Two more cancelled Star Wars titles have come out of Kashyyyk: a Rogue Squadron Trilogy and Rogue Squadron: X-Wing vs Tie Fighter which was a multiplayer title.

Rogue Squadron 2

Speaking with IGN, former Factor 5 president Julian Eggebrecht revealed the Rogue Squadron Trilogy started life as an exclusive for the original Xbox before heading over to Wii. It was to contain Rogue Squadron, Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader, and Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike.

Development on the project was finished for the consoles, and made use of the Wii Wheel, Wii Balance Board combo, and even had Wii Motion Plus lightsaber battles. The team ported the original Xbox game to Wii with a whole new graphics engine, and even had the trilogy running at 60fp on Wii.

"Believe me, if you ever saw it running on the Wii at 60fps, it is by far - and I think I'm not overstating that - the technically most impressive thing you would ever see on Wii," said Eggebrecht.

The other Star Wars title, Rogue Squadron: X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, featured players grouped together as one of two factions: the Rebels or Imperials. It was in development for the launch of Xbox 360.

According to Eggebrecht, the game was 50% finished when continuous internal issues at LucasArts plus the finanical crisis of 2008 caused the title's cancellation.

After Factor 5 was brought on as an in-house PlayStation developer, the multiplayer Rogue Squadron was pitched, but Sony wasn't interested.

Once the team's exclusivity period with Sony ended after the release of Lair, it went back to work on the trilogy, which is when development switched to Wii.
