Buy Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on PS3 or 360 to score a PS4 or Xbox One copy

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare supports cross-buy over console families.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare continues Activision's new tradition of supporting those who make the transition to a newer console, apparently.

Gamespot reports those who purchase a digital copy of Advanced Warfare on PS3 or Xbox 360 will also receive a next-gen copy for PS4 or Xbox One.

The scheme only applies within console families; you can't but a PS3 version and grab an Xbox One copy, for example. You also can't share your extra copy around, because it's tied to your PSN ID or Xbox Live Gamertag.

If you want to take advantage of this scheme, you need to purchase the last-gen version of the game before March 31, 2015 and then simply log into the appropriate store on PS4 or Xbox One. There's no time limit on transferring your multiplayer progress and DLC across, though.

There's one other interesting little point: on PlayStation, it works both ways - so if you buy the PS4 version, you'll get a PS3 copy too.

As yet we haven't heard anything about an upgrade scheme for retail copies, but there's certainly hope. Last year, Call of Duty: Ghosts players could fork out $10 to upgrade, while Destiny, a more recent Activision release, offered free upgrades. Activision didn't announce the scheme till quite late in the game, so you can probably afford to hold out for a while.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is due on PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in November.
