As it happens they wouldn't be that happy at all. He then sent the results to Kojima's Twitter feed. What does it all mean? Decide for yourself above.

01/02/13: Kojima interested in PS4′s social aspects

There's been a lot of speculation as to what formats Ground Zeroes is launching on, and Kojima's keen interest in the PS4's social functions has got him talking. With Kojima due to showcase FOX Engine at GDC, could a PS4 announcement be far away?

25/02/13: “!” – The Hideo Kojima Interview

I interviewed Hideo Kojima on the day of Metal Gear Rising: Revengence's UK launch. We discussed Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes' mature themes, his fears that it may flop, and how he is approaching the tone of the game moving forward. If you're a fan of Metal Gear, then you need to check it out via the link above. metal_gear_solid_5_phantom_pain_old_man

22/02/13: Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will tackle many taboos, may not release in its current state

As part of my Hideo Kojima interview, the series creator explained that he's worried Metal Gear Solid: Grouns Zeroes may flop due to his increased interest in mature themes. He added that his bosses at Konami may have to ask him some difficult questions surrounding the game's many taboos. Click the link above to see the full quote.

13/02/13: Kojima will showcase FOX Engine and more of Ground Zeroes at GDC '13

It's been a while since we heard from Koji-Pro on its plans for Ground Zeroes, but as it happens Kojima himself will be talking about the game and showing off more of the FOX Engine at GDC '13 in March. The session is called “Photorealism Through the Eyes of a ‘Fox’ – The Core of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes” and will show off some of the “key components and unique methods” used in the game’s development. According to GDC organizers. The talk will focus on the lighting system, environmental elements, and character realism among other things including the FOX Engine tools. We'll have more on this as we get it.

20/12/12: Kojima scans his lunchbox into FOX Engine to show off tech.

Hideo Kojima received a lunchbox from Sony to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear franchise. It featured edible faces of the series' characters, and lots of bento goodness. However, before scoffing down his treats, Kojima had his team scan the lunchbox into FOX Engine - a process which he said took two hours - and have Snake hold it. Like so: The room you see above isn't real, as it has been re-created in FOX Engine to show off how real its imagery can be. Here's an early shot of the scanned lunchbox: And the final thing: Here's a closer look at Snake: Not bad huh? metal_gear_solid_5_phantom_pain

10/12/12 - 'Moby Dick Studios' releases official HD 'The Phantom Pain' screens.

Mysterious 'developer' Moby Dick Studios has released 15 HD screens of The Phantom Pain, showing off segments of the VGA trailer, and one shot that you didn't see in the trailer, which sees Big Boss crawling past some red leather sofas. What does it all mean? See the shots here.

08/12/12 - David Hayter's arm hurts

Snake voice actor David Hayter was asked for his opinion on the Phantom Pain trailer, and had this to say:

08/12/12 - Two Phantoms, Dr. Kio Marv

Major shout-out to NeoGAF user Sn4ke_911 for this analysis of The Phantom Pain trailer. Sn4ke_911 proposes that these characters are the 'Two phantoms' born from FOX - as first mentioned in the first trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Snake/Big Boss is on the left, while what could be the badly burned man from the Ground Zeroes trailer stands on the right. Interesting. This is dead on the money. Note the goggles on the vision's head, the MSF outfit from Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. This looks incredibly close to a vision of Big Boss. Note that Portable Ops takes place before Big Boss suffered the accident that left him in a coma and led to the Les Enfant Terribles project, so this could be correct. Another spot-on find. Kojima was seen tweeting images from a car crash shoot on a Kojima Productions motion capture set back in June. The motion capture stuntman also revealed his involvement in the scene in an interview shortly after. Now this is interesting. The picture in the bottom right is an image of Dr. Kio Marv from Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on MSX, the second canonical game in Kojima's Metal Gear saga. It came out in Japan during 1990. In the game Marv is the creator of OILIX, an alternative fuel source. He is then kidnapped by Zanzibar Land mercenaries under the employ of Big Boss. Is this the same chap in the Phantom Pain trailer? Will we see Big Boss's descent into tyranny? Will we even see a young Solid Snake taking Big Boss down? I'm not sure, but that would be rather exciting.

08/12/12 - The Phantom Pain trailer debuts at VGAs 2012

Bloody hell, it's been a while since we heard from Kojima and Co on Ground Zeroes hasn't it? The wait has been worth it though it seems. The VGA 2012 awards showcased a trailer for something called 'The Phantom Pain', a next-gen title developed by Moby Dick studios and directed by a Swedish developer called Joakim Mogren. Note the word 'Ogre', which could related to Kojima's oft-teased 'Project Ogre'. 'Joakim' is an anagram of 'Kojima' and the man himself was spotted in the VGA crows wearing a Moby Dick Studios t-shirt, so yes this this trailer is indeed something Metal Gear-related - as if the insane amount of lens flare in the clip wasn't proof enough that the footage was running in FOX Engine. But the footage was peppered with clues that this is indeed a scene from either Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes or Metal Gear Solid V. Bear in mind Kojima has stated that Ground Zeroes is a prologue to something else, so The Phantom Pain could be our first actual glimpse at next-gen Metal Gear Solid v. First, just check out this GIF image of the trailer's title splash which has been enhanced to show the underlying text. Here's the trailer:

This article contained embedded media which can no longer be displayed.

The Phantom Pain by milkandmolasses Mysterious isn't it? Well, maybe not as much as it first appears. I've gone through the clip to offer theories and discuss what's going on and how it all ties in to the Metal Gear Solid canon: Snake's in a coma: We know this happens in the Metal Gear lore. Some time after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3, Naked Snake suffers a grave accident and ends up in a coma. During his long sleep Zero and the Patriots - who fear losing the greatest solider ever born - extract Snake's DNA and start the Les Enfants Terribles project. The project spawns three bio-engineered soldiers - Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and George Sears AKA 'Solidus Snake' - and after waking up from his coma Naked Snake becomes enraged at how he has been used by The Patriots and defects to found Militaires Sans Frontières, triggering the events of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The Phantom Pain could be a prelude to Peace Walker that then skips ahead after that game to show what happens next. Plus, bear in mind that the opening crawl of Kojima's Ground Zeroes trailer reads, 'From FOX, two phantoms were born'. Curious... The white petals: Snake reaches up to grab some white petals seen tumbling down from the ceiling. It seems that Snake is suffering from some kind of post-traumatic stress from his accident, as these white petals were also seen in the field at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3 - the same place he killed his mentor The Boss. Still, why does Snake have a fake arm here if he didn't in Peace Walker? Perhaps he did? This is Kojima we're talking about here. Maybe the fake arm is a hallucination too? We'll never know until Kojima tells us, but still, the petals are a give away. "On your feet soldier!" Why hello there Terminator reference. It's no secret that Kojima based the character Solid Snake on Terminator hero Kyle Reese when developing the original Metal Gear for MSX. In the film, this same line is shouted at Sarah Conner by actor Michael Biehn. Have we met before? Where have we seen crawling like that before? Also, note the bandage tied like a bandana, the gun holster and the rocking mullet. It's Snake alright. Familiar face? Is that Snake? It certainly looks like it. A vision of Volgin: Remember Volgin, the super-tough villain from Metal Gear Solid 3? Here he is - note the outfit from his fist-fight with Snake - walking through some flames as if we hadn't killed him already. Now, either this whole trailer is a coma-induced dream, or Snake's suffering from trauma. What do you think? A pale horse: There's also a strange, flaming vision of a horse. Snake's mentor The Boss rode a horse in Metal Gear Solid 3, and we know that by the events of Peace Walker that he's still not fully gotten over killing her. Could this be his guilt coming back to haunt him? Fail whale: Just before the end, a giant flaming whale leaps out of the sky - which is of course, impossible - so it does confirm that much of these visions are all in the character's head. Plus, it explains why the allegedly fake studio name is 'Moby Dick'. The Sorrow/Psycho Mantis: Look at the background. There's a floating figure that resembles both The Sorrow doll and Psycho Mantis. Although Mantis would call the trailer's timeline into question, this whole scene - the flames, the prosthetic arm, Volgin, the Boss's horse - all of it may be a cruel mind trick by The Sorrow or someone else. Watch the clip closely and you'll see the person floating there. That's it, that's all. Now, let me know what you think below. I'm curious to get everyone's thoughts on this. Please add anything you found that I've missed below.

While showing the game off to Eurogamer, Kojima confirmed the inclusion of a day/night cycle, stating that it changes up guard patrol patterns and changes the world in other ways. Eurogamer also reports that the gameplay Kojima showed the site sees Big Boss infiltrating the base first seen in the Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes demo. The demo ends Snake is seen negotiating with the scarred man for the release of Peace Walker’s Chico, who is the boy in the cage.

06/09/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes age issue clarified. Kojima says Snake isn't that old after all

Kojima has waded in to quash rumours that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes' version of Snake is really old. He even asked his developers to create a new render of Snake without his optical device and shared it on Twitter. Here it is:

05/09/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes' Snake isn't as old as he looks, Kojima confirms

During Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes demo, Snake pulls off his visor before looking at the camera. His hair looks like it's greying a lot. But Hideo Kojima has revealed on Twitter that he's not as old as he appears, and it's merely a result of the scene's lighting. Andriasang made the discovery here. So what does this mean for the game's timeline? Seeing as Paz and Chico are mentioned, this could be an almost direct continuation of Peace Walker. What do you think?

03/09/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is a “prologue”, coming to PS3, Xbox 360

Hideo Kojima has said that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is a prologue of bigger things to come, and is bringing it out on current-gen hardware. We're not sure what it's a prologue to - perhaps it'll be a demo of a larger game, or a prelude to a full Metal gear Solid 5 title. Hit the link here for more quotes and details from Kojima on the matter.

02/09/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes demo released online

Following on from Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event, Konami has released the Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes tech and gameplay demo into the wild. 31/08/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes reveal demo. Is Raiden the kid? [UPDATED]

Kojima's Ground Zeroes reveal demo was rumoured to show a young blonde boy of no more than ten sitting in a cage being mentally conditioned by a recording. His earphones were connected to a surgically implanted headphone jack in his chest. Initial rumours suggested this was a young Raiden, and that the game was set in the 1980s, but now that we've seen the footage, we can confirm that he's not blonde at all. The rest of our original entry is below: The trailer's villain says to the boy at one point, 'You're a real solider now' and 'Say hi to the boss.' In Metal Gear lore, Raiden was mentally conditioned from a young age to become a child soldier under the leadership of George Sears / Solidus Snake. So could 'the boss in this instance be Solidus? The trailer's villain also throws the boy a Walkman, which only started production in 1979. Raiden is born in the 1980s so the timeline definitely syncs up. It would be pretty sweet if Kojima showed us Raiden's origins in full. More as we get it.

31/08/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes adverts appear in Tokyo

Following yesterday's Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes announcement, pillars all over Tokyo were plastered with the below artwork overnight. We can think of worse things to wake up to in the morning.

30/08/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes 20 minute demo detailed

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was announced this morning at Kojima’s 25th anniversary event. Attendees were shown a 20 minute Ground Zeroes gameplay demo running on a high-spec PC that remained secret, until now thanks to Gamespot. The demo showed a man in a business suit being escorted to a military base by a well-armed patrol unit. It’s raining heavily as the man speaks with a boy trapped in a cage before throwing him a music player. The kid turns it on and the “Here’s To You” theme from Metal Gear Solid 4 plays. This one: The man then takes off his rain hat to reveal that his face is all heavily scarred and burned. He then wipes an emblem off the side of his chopper that reads ‘XOF’, as well as discarding a stash of ‘XOF’ emblems before geting in and then flies off. It’s ‘FOX’ backwards, obviously The subtitle “From FOX, two phantoms were born” then flashes up on the screen, referring to either Zero and Big Boss, or Liquid and Solid Snake, the Les Enfants Terribles. Big Boss is then seen wearing visors, before flipping them up to reveal his trademark eye patch and gawdawful mullet. Kojima then showed off some gameplay, in which Snake crouched and crawled around. There was no camo index from Metal Gear Solid 3 or anything like that, just old fashioned stealth. It’s an open world game. Snake can call in a chopper on demand or drive a jeep around, and there is a third-person shooting mechanic. There’s no word currently on first-person aiming.

30/08/12 - Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes: what's in the name?

The name 'Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes' is interesting for a few reasons. Anyone up on the MGS backstory will know that Zero was Snake's commander in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and would later go on to be his arch nemesis. Zero served in the SAS alongside the Boss and later joined the CIA. Once there he hired Donald Anderson (the DARPA chief in Metal Gear Solid) and Dr. Clark. After the events of Operation Snake Eater he formed the Patriots with Clark and Anderson, as well as Big Boss and EVA. Unhappy with the Patriot's actions, Big Boss defected and formed the mercenary group Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders) and both snake and Big Boss would become enemies from then on. During the events of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (originally Metal Gear Solid 5) Big Boss forms Outer Heaven, a state for soldiers who are fed up being used as tools by their respective governments. At some point in the series canon, MSF goes rogue and in 1995, a young Solid Snake is sent to Outer Heaven to diffuse the uprising and eventually takes down Big Boss in battle. Only for him return later in the series. Outer Heaven is based in South Africa, and so far Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes concept art, FOX Engine demonstrations and today's reveal have pointed at a South African setting, such as art depicting Big Boss standing next to a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog - native to the region. This could be the game where we see Big Boss lose his way, as well as sparking his war with Zero and the Patriots. There's also the little matter of Big Boss saving the life of a young Frank Jaeger in South Africa - the same man who later becomes Grey Fox / Cyborg Ninja. Either way, it's an exciting time to be a Metal Gear Solid fan.

30/08/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes second Snake image leaked

30/08/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes first artwork leaked

This is the first confirmed image of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. The shot depicts Big Boss in full stealth mode. You can tell this will be another prequel as Snake has a Militaires Sans Frontières patch on his shoulder. Which looks like this: The image of Big Boss confirms rumours that the game will be set some time during or after the 1970's. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker took place in 1974, some ten years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3.

30/08/12 - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes announced

Hideo Kojima announced the next instalment of his sprawling Metal Gear series at his 25th anniversary event in Japan this morning. The game will run in FOX Engine and was shown on a high-end PC. Attendees were sworn to secrecy on the game, but several tweets leaked out. One account explained that the game is open world, and that the demo showed Snake 'killing guards, evading search lights by crawling, and riding around in a jeep'. No release date or formats - other than PC - were confirmed.

25/08/12 - Metal Gear’s 25th anniversary event to ‘shake up’ industry

During the latest Kojima Productions Report podcast, Koji Pro's Chris Johns Talked up Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear 25th anniversary reveal by saying, “A lot of things to look forward to next week, not just for fans, but I think the industry’s gonna be shook by what we’re going to be able to present here.” We now know that the reveal was Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, and a new social title, Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops.

21/08/12 - Next Metal Gear Solid ‘will launch Summer 2013 at the earliest’, says mo-cap actor

In an interview with Silent Haven, Silent Hill 4 mo-cap actor Eric Bossic was interviewed for his work on Konami's titles and let slip some interesting information regarding Kojima's next Metal Gear title, which could allude to Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. “My past motion capture session was for an upcoming Metal Gear game," said Bossic, "I will be back with Kojima again in the fall, and maybe other sessions. This title is a long way off.” When asked which Metal Gear project he was working on, Bossic added, “I am working on a future metal gear, not to be released until next year summer at the earliest, if not later then that. Im doing motion capture only.” “I can 100% say my voice will not be involved in this. I dont even know what the title is, they are all very secretive and sometimes even the scenes I act out I dont even know the full story, because they want to keep it secret.2 “I suppose it is fine to mention I am working on it, everybody knows Kojima is making something now, and I posted the photo on my page here with him. The only thing is that I cant ever answer any questions about it or talk about, not for sometime.”

17/07/12 - Metal Gear Solid 5 Comic-Con rumour debunked by Konami

Following an alleged Comic-Con leak - in which a source claimed to have snapped photos of a Metal gear Solid 5 logo and text crawl - Hideo Kojima himself took to Twitter to debunk the logo as “completely fake”. Nothing to see here, move along.

20/06/12 - Rumours suggest Solid Snake will return in the next Metal Gear Solid game

French magazine has posted a rumour suggesting that Solid Snake - that's the younger one to those who aren't up on MGS lore - will appear in the next Metal Gear title, which we now know is Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. In an interview with Kojima, the director said, "About Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things: there will be much question of infiltration, espionage, and convincing people to give you ‘a favour’ like in the last Metal Gear Solid." “I liked the idea of social interactions in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but we will see. And if I say more, the female ninja public relations officer, who is behind the door, I will be carved up into pieces. So it’s better that we meet again when the time comes to talk about Metal Gear Solid 5." “It is a spinoff that tries something different,” Kojima was to have said. “We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots.”

02/03/12 - Kojima Productions asks: Is it Real, or is it the Fox Engine?

Kojima Productions has posted shots taken with a camera and some rendered using its Fox Engine, and has asked the viewer to decide which are the “real-life” photos and which were from the Fox Engine. You can take Kojima's test here. The Fox Engine will fuel Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes a new Metal Gear game revealed at Hideo Kojima's 25th anniversary event.

22/02/12 - Next Metal Gear Solid: first concept art revealed

Hideo Kojima tweeted the above image of Big Boss wearing a 'Diamond Dogs' patch on his arm. The dog next to him is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a breed native to South Africa. In Metal Gear Solid lore, Big Boss spent some time in Africa fighting with his unit MSF. It is here that he saves the life of a young Frank Jaeger, who would later grow up to be Grey Fox in the NES / MSX Metal Gear games, and later Cyborg Ninja in the PSone game Metal Gear Solid. Will we see Big Boss save Frank's life? It would make sense, seeing the two are working together in the second MSX Metal Gear game 'Snake's Revenge'. FOX Engine tech demonstrations have also taken place in an African climate. The pieces are falling together.

22/02/12 - Kojima hires for next MGS project, releases Big Boss art

Japanese firm Nomura Securities has stated that the next Metal Gear Solid title will launch between April 2013 and March 2014, and placed Konami's projected earnings at ¥60 billion as a result. Check out their report here.

21/12/12 - Kojima: Project Ogre an open-world affair

Hideo Kojima has posted more images of his FOX Engine character models and has teased that his new game will be an open world title. We now know that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is an open world game, so it's not a secret any more. However, CNN reported that Kojima told them the title is “set in a very open world where players can wander around and explore freely. Players should still be able to find new sights and worthwhile adventures after having played the game for as many as 100 hours.” Expect Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes to be big then. Here's his FOX Engine character model pic:

16/12/12 - Kojima teases Project Ogre, posts screens on Twitter

Kojima really loves Twitter doesn't he? This time he posted the below image of a character - who, at the time some sources suggested was of the Boss in World War II - running in FOX Engine. We now know that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is set after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, so that would be impossible. The game follow's Snake's MSF unit sometime during or after the 1970s.
