Need for Speed Movie has made $63.4 million worldwide so far

Need for Speed was the third-highest grossing movie in the States last week, after debuting in cinemas on March 12. It has smashed $63 million at the box office worldwide.

It follows Brenna's Need for Speed Movie review, in which she made many interesting observations.

The game adaptation debuted at third in the US box office charts over its opening weekend, coming behind Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and 300: Rise of an Empire. In the States alone the film has generated some $17.8 million so far, with receipts from over 40 worldwide territories accounting for $63.4 million.

The movie is now almost in-profit, after costing $66 million to produce.

Dave Hollis, distribution chief for Dreamworks distributor Disney said of the news, "It's a disappointing start on the domestic side, but to open to that number worldwide and nearly match the budget of the film is great. This was a very affordable movie and with many territories left to open, everyone will be just fine. We feel great about where we are."

This bodes well for game-to-movie adaptations. Could it raise the bar for the Assassin's Creed film and World of Warcraft's big screen treatment? It remains to be seen.
