The Elder Scrolls Online has attracted 3 million beta applications

Zenimax Online has recorded very high interest in The Elder Scrolls Online's closed beta testing.

"We’ve had well over 3 million beta sign-ups, which we haven’t announced before," Bethesda's Matt Firor told PCGamesN.

PCGamesN compared the astounding beta interest to Guild Wars 2's sales of 2 million; it's also worth noting that reigning MMORPG champion World of Warcraft peaked out subscriber numbers at 12 million, and currently holds about 7 million.

As for how many are already in testing, Firor dropped a vague ballpark figure.

"You don’t want to let too many people in early, because the game is, frankly, not too good in early beta and you don’t want to expose many people to that, but we’re well into the tens of thousands."

The Elder Scrolls Online, or TESO as we fondly refer to it over tea and biscuits, is coming to Mac, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014. It will require a monthly subscription.
