Sega has unexpectedly released Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 &2 on the Ouya Store, complete with a free trial offer.

Both episodes are priced at $7 on Discover, Ouya's store, and as per the Android-based micro-console's policies, offer free-to-try levels.

Here's the official features list, direct from Sega's blog:

  • EXCLUSIVE OUYA FREE TO TRY
Download Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I and play through the first level, Splash Hill Zone, for free. Download Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II and play through the first two levels, A New Frontier and Snow Blind Wonderland, for free.
  • NEW MOVES
All of Sonic’s classic moves are available, including the newer Homing Attack which will add a new level of control and excitement.
  • CLASSIC SONIC STAGES
Race through 4 unique zones containing 4 acts each as well as 7 special stages.
  • SPECIAL STAGES RETURN
A staple of the Genesis-era games, the special stages return allowing fans to collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds and unlock Super Sonic.
  • REVAMPED CLASSIC BOSS BATTLES
Dr. Eggman returns with new and improved mechas and will go berserk when he accumulates damage.

We weren't actually expecting Sonic 4, but Sega had promised Sonic CD would make an appearance in June.

"Stay tuned as Sonic CD will be coming to Ouya soon," the publisher said.

Thanks, Joystiq.
