PS4 has cloud processing features, but they're not mandatory, says Yoshida

PS4 has space for cloud processing features, but rather than lock players into always-online connections for them to work, Sony's president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that it's up to developers if they want to use them.

Speaking with Polygon, Yoshida said, "Linking, matchmaking...there are already many computations being done on the cloud side. We don't believe every title needs that. But if your title needs [an] online connection to provide some online features: Go for it."

Yoshida's comments come as Sony confirmed the PS4's Gaikai-powered cloud streaming functionality will hit the US in 2014. The service will allow instant streaming of PS3 games at launch.

What do you make of the option for cloud processing? Let us know below.
