Defense Grid 2 funded by Double Fine’s angel investor

Hidden Path Entertainment has revealed the source of the mysterous investment enabling the development of Defense Grid 2 – Dracogen, the firm that lent Double Fine a helping hand.

Hidden Path was unable to crowdfund its sequel, but promised to finish it if at all possible, announcing last month that a private investor had come to the rescue.

That investor is Steven Dengler, founder of XE.com. He’s gaining a reputation for throwing massive amounts of money at games and other projects through both Kickstarter and his investment firm, Dracogen.

“I’m extremely excited to be working with Hidden Path to help make Defense Grid 2 a reality. I’m a huge fan of the original game, and it’s tremendously satisfying to provide resources to help get the game made. I love that crowd sourced funding provided the first step along the journey,” Dengler said.

“It’s amazing to live in a time when the developer, a fan investor, and the fan base of the game itself can get a game funded on their own without relying on traditional publishers. This is a whole new model and it will be fascinating to see how far it can go.”

Defense Grid 2 is expected in the first half of 2014.
