Angry Birds movie due in 2016

Not content with an animated TV series, Rovio has signed a deal with Sony Pictures to bring Angry Birds to the silver screen.

The Angry Birds animated film is a 3D feature in the works at Rovio, and will launch worldwide on July 1, 2016.

According to a press release, several companies vied for the worldwide distribution rights over the past few weeks, with Sony Pictures Entertainment emerging victorious.

"Sony impressed us with their great attitude, determination, and professionalism. They convinced us that we have found the right partners and team to help us market and distribute our first motion picture," Rovio's Mikael Hed said.

Since launching as a paid app in 2009, Angry birds has racked up over 1.7 billion downloads in all its various permutations and spin-offs.

The press release noted that the Angry Birds Toons series has pulled in over 150 million views just from the Angry Birds apps, let alone other channels.
