Wii U hacked, according to modder group Wiikey, Nintendo responds

Wii U has been hacked, a modder group called Wiikey has claimed, but Nintendo says its anti-piracy blockers are still keeping them out. Who's telling the truth? Decide for yourself here.

Eurogamer reports that Wiikey claim to have pirate games running on Wii U, following a statement on their site. Their WiikeU emulator is said to allow any Wii U game to be played via USB drives.

"Yes, its real," said the statement. "We have now completely reversed the Wii U drive authentication, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for this next generation K3y. Stay tuned for updates.”

The group hasn't provided any concrete evidence that it has hacked the Wii U, and Nintendo responded to the news saying that its safeguards remain intact. An official spokesperson told the site, "Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security.

"However, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode. Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products' security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy."

The site adds that a simple firmware update could block out any attempts to hack Nintendo's console.

We'll have more if and when it happens.
