EA lay-offs strike mobile teams in UK, India – report

Although EA still isn’t keen to comment, it has made layoffs at at least one and probably two studios, with talk of a wider restructuring across its mobile and social divisions.

Develop cites an anonymous internal source for word that EA is restructuring, and began making redundancies at Playfish’s London office up to one month ago.

Although EA has not commented on the matter, the news follows on from the closure of a couple of Playfish’s social games, and tweets from around the industry certainly lend wieght to the news.

On top of that, Develop was told last year by Playfish CEO and co-founder Kristian Segerstrale that the brand would be effectively dissolved, with staff moving into other teams.

Elsewhere, MCV reports that cuts have been made at EA’s Hyderabad, India studio. “Around 50 employees” are said to have been let go.

EA apparently confirmed that some cuts had been made but did not say how many staff were affected or what their roles were.

“EA is sharpening its focus to provide games for new platforms and mobile. In some cases, this involves reducing team sizes as we evolve into a more efficient organisation,” a representative for the publisher said.

“These are difficult decisions to let go of good people who have made important contributions to EA, and whenever possible we retrain or relocate employees to new roles. Streamlining our operations will help ensure EA is bringing the best next-generation games to players around the world.”
