Ubisoft Montreal CEO feels next-gen will see fewer triple-A games “taking a bigger chunk of the market”

Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat expects current market trends to continue with next-gen systems: big triple-A titles with more production values and the usual tablet, mobile and social games space. However, this will lead to “B-games” being pushed out.

Speaking with GI International, Mallat said there will be fewer triple-A games “taking a bigger chunk of the market,” and that companies putting “quality and consumer value” first will continue to enjoy “great success.”

Mallat the new generation of consoles will help the struggling packaged goods market despite the rising development costs, which if managed properly, will provide a return. One way to help with costs, is to use larger development teams and make use of cross-studio collaborations – such as with Ubisoft Montreal and Toronto.

“It’s a question of bringing quality content to the gamers and enjoying great success thanks to that,” he said. “So it’s OK to invest more when you get more in return.”

The Montreal studio is approximately 2,400-strong, with 300 or so working out of the Toronto location.
