Skullgirls dev offers to donate engine to MLP fan team

Skullgirls developer Lab Zero Games has announced a generous final stretch goal for its crowdfunding campaign, offering to share tech with a group of My Little Pony fans working on a troubled fan game.

“Autumn and Lab Zero have agreed to give Mane the Skullgirls engine free if we reach $725,000,” the developer announced on Twitter.

Mane6 is the team behind the project once known as My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic. regardless of your thoughts on the cartoon series, the game looked fairly impressive for a fan project, but was shut down by Hasbro. Friendship is Magic creator Lauren Faust has since come on board to help Mane6 re-develop the game with original characters, under a new, unannounced title.

“We’ve talked directly to them, and we can now confirm that yes, it is a serious offer, and one we in the devteam are excited about,” Mane6 commented on its website.

The Skullgirls Indiegogo campaign has ten days remaining and has accumulated over $430,000 at time or writing, far beyond the team’s initial $150,000 goal. The initial project of one DLC character has grown to an extra stage and story; new voice packs; and a second DLC character with stage and story. Future goals include more voice packs and a third character with stage and story.

It’s nice of Lab Zero to spread its good fortune around; it knows all about what it’s like to be a struggling indie.
