Disney DreamPlay toys come to life on your tablet

Disney has teamed up with Nantworks and JAKKs to launch a new line of augmented reality-enabled toys.

Using a free app, purchasers can use a tablet to interact with toys licensed from Disney character; examples include Tinkerbell and Sebastian the crab.

Reuters reports the app will be available for both iOS and Android, and the toys, which are a few dollars more expensive than their non-AR cousins, are on show at CES 2013.

Toys R Us and Top-Toy have signed up to carry the DreamPlay line.

The product has some similarities to Skylanders, but without a full game world; its existence may explain rumours that Disney Infinity, which is due for reveal next week, will have Skylanders-like functionality with real world objects.
