God of War: Ascension dev diary chops a giant cyclops face in half

My classical Greek isn't exactly prize-winning but I'm pretty sure a "megalops" would be a giant eyeball and not, as Sony Santa Monica seems to believe, a giant cyclops. A giant cyclops is arguably more badass, though, so you can't blame the team for putting one in God of War: Ascension's multiplayer mode. Learn how this ferocious beast was created in the developer diary through the break.

The best bit of this diary is finding out that there was a flaming internal debate over whether the creature should be unofficially nicknamed "Megalops" or the debatably more accurate "Megaclops", with the latter rejected strongly by a faction who believed it sounds "like a giant horsey". A giant. Horsey. Please put this in the sequel.

The point is a little moot as it's not the character's actual name; "Megalops" is actually Polyphemus, the cyclops Odysseus meets and blinds on his legendary journey. Now, multiplayer characters battle for the chance to finish him off in a grotesque execution also detailed in the video below.

God of War: Ascension is a PlayStation 3 exclusive due in March 2013.
