Miyamoto on Mario: famed dev answers 'big' questions

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has answered some of the 'biggest' burning questions surrounding the iconic plumber. Things like his last name and his natural hair colour, if these are things you really wanted to know about. Read on for a chuckle.

Speaking with GameInformer, Miyamoto was quizzed about some of the odder questions regarding the Mario series, such as the plumbers full name being 'Mario Mario', thanks to the utterly woeful 1993 live-action film adaptation Super Mario Bros.

Miyamoto replied, "This is an old story, but Hollywood did a film version of the Mario Bros. many years back. There was a scene in the script where they needed a last name for the characters. Somebody suggested that, because they were the Mario Bros., their last name should be Mario."

"So, they made him "Mario Mario," he added, "I heard this and laughed rather loudly. Of course, this was ultimately included in the film. Based on the film, that's [how] their names ended up. But, just like Mickey Mouse doesn't really have a last name, Mario is really just Mario and Luigi is really just Luigi."

There you go. Happy now? Check out the brilliant full article here for the answers to more questions like why Bowser goes karting with Mario and Peach even though he's always trying to ruin their day.
