Hawken won't support Oculus Rift at launch

Oculus Rift may have been slightly over-enthusiastic in tis messaging of Hawken's support for the headset; the mech sim's developers don't even have the hardware yet.

Speaking to GameSpy, Adhesive Games' chief production officer Bill Wagner said the team is excited but far from finished implementing the tech.

"We're really excited about it but we want to get the hardware first," he said.

"We've got designs and plans on how we would do it, like enabling people to look around inside the cockpit while still being able to move forward and control the mech. But it's super early to be talking about it right now."

Oculus Rift support will apparently be implemented via patch post-launch, with Wagner unable to give a release window.

"Right now we have a huge focus on hitting our December 12 release date so it's hard to say right now. We want to get the hardware and we want to make the experience as great as we can for our customers and make sure it fits within the game," he said.

This messaging is a far cry from that given on the Oculus Rift Kickstarter, which claimed the headset developer had partnered with Adhesive and publish Meteor "to launch their incredibly evocative mech shooter, Hawken, in virtual reality with the Rift on 12.12.12".

It's vague wording, but it's hard not to see it as something of a fib, given Wagner's suggestion that Adhesive hasn't even seen the tech yet. The Oculus Rift Kickstarter closed with over $2.4 million raised. The headset has no launch date, but those who pledged over $300 will receive a dev kit version in December.
