Silicon Knights "returning to its roots" with mystery project

Beleaguered Canadian developer Silicon Knights is forging ahead with its unannounced new game, despite losing publisher support.

"The company is currently refocusing and returning to its roots, working on one of its most requested titles for the next generation," a spokesperson told Kotaku.

Yesterday, Silicon Knights confirmed rumours of significant lay offs, although the cuts were not as grievous as initially reported.

The cuts were put down to the cancellation of a project "at the final second".

"We are currently in discussions with other potential partners," the representative said of the mystery project.

The possibility of a publisher switch suggests Silicon Knights owns the rights to whatever it is developing; the develoepr's best-received work may be Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.

Eidos was the last to hold the rights to the franchise; its properties were transfered to Square Enix during acquisition. The publisher has been known to part with properties it has no intentions of redeveloping.

Silicon Knights last release, X-Men: Destiny, was very poorly received, as was the one before that, Too Human. Prior to that it scored cult success with Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.
