FIFA 12 nabs 3.2 million sales for best 2011 launch

FIFA 12 has bested Gears of War 3's efforts to steal the crown for best launch of 2011 - so far.

EA's internal estimates, as reported by Destructoid, suggest 3.2 million units of the soccer sim have been shifted in less than one week. That's worldwide, and across all core platforms.

Not only does this top Gears of War 3's 3 million (admittedly, an Xbox 360 exclusive) for top spot this year, it also makes FIFA 12 the best launch of a sports game ever.

The previous record holder was, of course, FIFA 11, but that only managed 2.6 million sales in the same time, showing significant growth for the franchise.

While it was setting new records, EA Sports also racked up the busiest day in its online gaming history on FIFA 12' first Saturday, with 8 million FIFA 12 games resulting in 10 million game sessions across all titles. Since launch, players have put more than 3 million hours of online gaming in, too.

The mobile version of the game is also doing well with 879,000 sales, charting in 30 countries worldwide.
